The Short Inca Trail 2 days is the perfect option for travelers with limited time. It follows the most scenic section of the legendary Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Furthermore, the route takes you through breathtaking cloud forest, impressive Inca ruins, and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in all of Peru. In addition, you arrive at Machu Picchu in the afternoon of Day 1 – when the crowds are smaller and the light is beautiful. Therefore, this two-day adventure delivers a genuine Inca Trail experience without the four-day commitment.
WHAT IS THE SHORT INCA TRAIL 2 DAYS?
The Short Inca Trail 2 days covers 12 km (7.5 miles) of original Inca stone path. It starts at KM 104 and ends at Machu Picchu. Furthermore, the route visits Chachabamba, the impressive ruins of Wiñay Wayna at 2,600 m (8,530 ft), and the famous Sun Gate at 2,720 m (8,924 ft). In addition, the maximum altitude is much lower than the classic 4-day trail. Therefore, altitude sickness is far less of a concern on this route.
WHO IS THE SHORT INCA TRAIL SUITABLE FOR?
This trek is designed for travelers of all fitness levels. However, a basic level of physical fitness is recommended. The hike takes around 6 hours on Day 1. Furthermore, the trail includes a steady uphill climb from 2,100 m (6,890 ft) to the Sun Gate at 2,720 m (8,924 ft). In addition, it is a great option for families, couples, and solo travelers. Therefore, even if you have never hiked in Peru before, this route is fully achievable with the right preparation.
WHY CHOOSE THE SHORT INCA TRAIL OVER THE CLASSIC 4-DAY ROUTE?
The classic 4-day Inca Trail requires a government permit. These permits are limited and sell out months in advance. However, the Short Inca Trail 2 days also requires a permit – but availability is much better. Furthermore, the lower altitude makes acclimatization easier. In addition, you still walk original Inca stone paths and visit Wiñay Wayna, one of the most spectacular sites on the entire Inca Trail. Therefore, it delivers the authentic experience in a much more accessible format.

Your day starts early. We pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:00 a.m. by private vehicle. Furthermore, we drive through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo Train Station. There you board the Expedition Train to KM 104 – the official starting point of the Short Inca Trail 2 days. Before the hike begins, your guide hands you a packed lunch to enjoy on the trail.
You cross the Urubamba River and pass through the entrance checkpoint. Then the hike begins. The first section follows a gentle uphill trail through lush cloud forest. Along the way, you visit Chachabamba – an Inca ceremonial site at the start of the route. Furthermore, the trail rises gradually toward Wiñay Wayna at 2,600 m (8,530 ft). This archaeological complex is one of the highlights of the entire Inca Trail. Your guide explains the history of its terraces, ceremonial buildings, and water channels while you enjoy views over the valley below. In addition, orchids, birds, butterflies, and native wildlife surround the trail throughout this section.
After lunch at Wiñay Wayna, you continue along the final section of the trail. The famous stone steps lead you up to the Sun Gate – Inti Punku – at 2,720 m (8,924 ft). Therefore, arriving here in the afternoon offers a quieter, more intimate first view of Machu Picchu. The sight of the citadel from above is one of the most memorable moments in all of Peru. WHAT TO PACK IN YOUR DAY PACK
Bring your original passport, 1 to 2 liters of water, and a good daypack between 20 and 30 liters. Furthermore, wear comfortable hiking shoes or boots with good grip. In addition, pack a warm layer for cool mornings and a lightweight rain jacket – the cloud forest can be wet at any time of year. Sunscreen, insect repellent, a sun hat, and personal snacks are also important. Therefore, traveling light on this trail makes the 6-hour hike significantly more comfortable.
IMPORTANT TIPS BEFORE YOU GO
Spend at least 2 nights in Cusco before the trek. This helps your body adjust to the altitude. Furthermore, the Short Inca Trail 2 days closes every February for maintenance. Therefore, plan your trip between March and January. In addition, your original passport is required at all checkpoints and at the Machu Picchu entrance – copies are not accepted.
